Over the years, seniors have had many opportunities to take challenging and interesting classes at Lake. After taking a poll, seniors have voted AP Microeconomics, led by Mr. McCoy, as their favorite class. Many seniors also voted for Pop Culture, taught by Mr. Stadulis, as their second favorite class.
Microeconomics has been such a successful class because of the teacher, Mr. McCoy, and his passion for education. Mr. McCoy believes that education is more than just assignments and content, it is about developing important life skills.
Mr. McCoy incorporates many beneficial activities into his classes like Wonderful Wednesday videos and competitive games. Wonderful Wednesday is when Mr. McCoy takes time out of the class to play inspirational videos that cause students to reflect on their perspectives. The games he incorporates helps students to get hands on examples of the content in the class that can build critical thinking skills.
“The students know that I want them to be there everyday,” said Lake teacher Mr. McCoy.
Mr. McCoy makes the classroom a positive environment by maintaining a supportive attitude. The energy he puts into each class leaves a lasting impact on the students.
Microeconomics can be a challenging class for students because of the difficult content, however students feel the challenge is worth it because of the positive environment and development of important skills.
“There were times that I thought of switching classes, though as Mr. McCoy preached his ideologies on teaching and character, I realized that this is where I needed to be,” said senior Jordyn Holben.
Pop Culture is another class with a passionate teacher and a positive environment. Students enjoy getting to work on fun projects like a decade fashion show, debates on top movies of certain decades, and recreations of famous music videos. During the decade fashion show, students dress up as a specific decade and bring in an item to represent their decade. They pick a song to enter the room to and get to share a decade they learned about with the class.
“Interest in Pop Culture has grown because it is a class where students get to discuss fun and interesting topics while still learning about the historical impact these topics have had,” said Pop Culture teacher, Mr. Stadulis.
Similarly to what was said about Microeconomics and Pop Culture, seniors had many positive things to say when looking back on the classes they have taken and the teachers they have interacted with. It was a common theme to hear students talking about how Lake’s staff has inspired students to become their best.
