Lake from a German Perspective

Mariessa Stensbeck, Staff Writer

As an exchange student, I can happily say that Lake is a great school and an amazing placement for every exchange student.

Shortly after my arrival in the U.S., I was welcomed at Lake by its incredible staff and amazing peers, who are always willing to help me.

Even though I didn’t make the volleyball team, Coach Anderson still included me and allowed me to be a part of this valuable experience. He made me the Team Manager and included me in every game, team meal, and team bonding activity. For many, this won’t seem significant, but I am truly grateful for this opportunity.

During the first few weeks, I was called to the principal’s office. Like every other student in my situation, I assumed I was in trouble. I nervously shuffled in, only to be greeted by Mr. Harold, who simply wanted to check in on me and make sure that I was happy at Lake. This was not only a kind gesture but also something meaningful for me. Lake’s principal is a wonderful person who truly cares about and appreciates every single one of his students. Additionally, my teachers made me smile every day and I’m extremely appreciative of them.

Mr. Six not only took me on my first field trip but also taught me about psychology in an entertaining way that made me giggle every time he told a joke. Mrs. Salyer helped me adjust, especially in my first weeks, and gave me a copy of the Pledge of Allegiance that was an absolute lifesaver. She also encouraged me to start writing for the digital newspaper, one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Mrs. Smith taught  my favorite subject, U.S. History, but also cared about my wellbeing. Whenever I was having a bad day, she was always the person who could make me smile again. She was someone who made my experience at this school amazing. Alongside those three individuals are the countless other teachers who make Lake great.

All in all, I am so thankful for the memories I made. My host family and I traveled to Washington D.C., went to Disney with the marching band, celebrated at Cedar Point for my birthday, and even attended a baby shower in West Virginia. Other than that, I was able to make lots of great memories with my friends.

Going to Sheetz with them right after a Friday-night football game was something I especially enjoyed. I will also never forget trying new restaurants with them or just cracking jokes together. An experience I would like to share is also my favorite memory with my host mom: when I had my first Reese’s Cup. Past the wrapper, I didn’t know that there was a layer of black packaging right around the cup, so I bit into it and tried to eat it while my host mom laughed.
