The Streaks have started this season fast, going 4-1 through the first five weeks. They have had some impressive wins, beating Mckeesport in a nail biting finish, and handling Boardman, Brecksville, and Glenoak in a fairly easy fashion . Lake has had a suffocating defense, allowing a mean 13 points per game, while the offense is averaging just over 25 points a game.
Key players Ethan Hunt and Charlie Christopher have been leading the way offensively. While on the other side of the ball, everyone is overachieving, which is why this unit is so great. One thing that really stands out is the obvious preparation and readiness going into game time. The boys seem very motivated to play, which is a compliment to the captains and the coaches of the team.
Senior captain Dylan Sponseller shared his thoughts following the win against Glenoak. It was pretty obvious that he took some responsibility after the crushing loss at Perry. Sponseller made sure to lead the team to a good week of practice and come prepared against Federal League opponent Glenoak.
“We didn’t have a good week of practice going up to that game, which is why we came out flat and didn’t play well,” stated Sponseller. He reports that the game against Perry was a “wake up call”, and that anyone can beat anyone in the Federal League, so they need to be focused day in and day out to try and get better daily.
When asking how he goes about balancing his personal accolades with success of the team, Sponseller claimed, “I’d much rather have an ok game and win then a good game and lose, I just want to do my 1/11th to help the team win”. Clearly, he is a team first player, which is why he is a perfect fit for a team captain.
Going into the season, the Blue Streaks had some new faces, as they lost a lot of players in the class of ‘24 along with some other players deciding not to play. With this, many players have had to step into an unexpected role.
Junior Alex Quior was one of the members asked to take on a new role. Quior received his first varsity minutes as wide receiver towards the end of last season, but never dreamed this year he’d take on the role of quarterback. When asking him what his expectations were going into the season, Quior stated, “We really want to win the fed. We have been contenders for the past couple years and see no signs of stopping”. While the expectations may have been low from an outside view, the team fully believed that they could compete with anyone, which is now evident through five weeks.
