The Lake Blue Streaks Girls Tennis team has 58 wins and only 30 losses thus far in the season. For their senior night they played the Boardman Tennis Team. They already played them once this year and won overall, so they hope to do the same thing again. The girls were supposed to play them on Sept 24th but due to poor weather, the game was rescheduled for Thursday the 27th.
All the seniors were lined up in their matching warm-ups and uniforms, taking pictures in front of their banners. Coach Emily, the head coach of the Blue Streaks, started out the day by recognizing the seniors and their accomplishments throughout the year. Their banners were hanging on the fences by yard signs that spell out “senior night”. There’s a table next to the courts with big bags for the seniors as well as cookies for after the match.
After coach Emily recognized all the seniors and they walked out to the court with their families to get photos. While getting pictures Boardman finally showed up, 30 minutes late. The coaches let them warm up for a little but then everybody paired off and headed to their assigned courts.
Audrey Cottrell, a senior on the Blue Streaks, is currently participating for her third year. When asked what she’s is most proud of accomplishing during her time; she talked about the friendships that she’s developed. Her favorite memories were when she got to play doubles with her friend Emily.
There’s a lot of lessons one can learn from playing sports; for Cottrell it was perseverance. She said, “The super hot days forced me to push through the mental pain, and the aches in my joints made me push through the physical pain”. Most athletes have a certain routine they do before competing but this athlete just enjoys “listening to hype music specifically cupcake”.
Cottreall plans to only to play tennis for fun after this season, but will miss it immensely.
Overall it was an eventful day at the courts with the Lake High School Girl’s Tennis Team. If you’re thinking about joining, just take the leap. As one can see Cottrell was able to take away valuable life lessons, forever friends, and the ability to get a strong workout in.
