There are a multitude of positive reasons to be a part of Digital News; seniors taking the class this past school year have shared their viewpoint why students should join, and how is has impacted their writing.
Laney: Students should definitely get involved in Digital News because it gives them the opportunity to get involved in an elective that develops writing skills and knowledge on current events. Before I joined the team, I had no idea what Digital News was, but it turned out to be an amazing experience that made me appreciate writing more. On top of that, it’s also a really chill environment where we get to have fun also while learning more about creative writing styles. We get a lot of freedom in the classroom, and the teachers are really nice and laid back. We also do fun things like monthly parties, breakfast, pranking nearby teachers and sometimes even a baby shower! Being a part of the Digital News team not only enhanced my writing skills but also sparked an interest in pursuing a similar newspaper class in college. If you like to be creative, have an interest in writing, and have fun in the classroom then Digital News is definitely for you!
Liv: Digital News was such a fun and amazing class. It gave me the opportunity to publish and write fun stories for everyone to see. I was also taught different writing techniques and skills that I did not know about before this class. The teacher, Mrs. Sayler, was always so helpful, fun, and just great to talk to. She helped with our stories and always made sure we were where we needed to be. I look forward to this class everyday when I get to school! You get to meet new friends, and also bond with the Yearbook staff and amazing teacher, Mrs Cramer, since they share a classroom with us. I would 100% recommend taking this class if you are someone who enjoys writing! Or if you just want a class that always has good vibes. It is also extremely laid back, chill, and everyone gets along very well. I didn’t join Digital News until the second week of school, and I am so glad I made the decision to join it last minute. You will not regret taking this class!
Grace: Digital News presented me with the opportunity to express my creativity in a way no class ever had before. Getting the chance to write about the things I am truly passionate about felt like a breath of fresh air compared to normal coursework. The relaxed and low-pressure atmosphere created within Digital News gave me a class to honestly look forward to each and every day. As someone who views writing as an outlet for stress relief and self-expression, enrolling in Digital News was a no-brainer. Mrs. Salyer, the Digital News advisor, is also an incredibly caring and passionate individual. She is devoted to fueling her students’ interests and will always find a way to incorporate original storylines into the newspaper. In the end, I would recommend this course to any and all students who are searching for an environment to channel their inner passion and freely express their opinions.
Andrea: Digital News is an amazing class to take if you need an extra credit or if you love writing. This class has given me the opportunity to share my stories with the whole school and to write about things I am genuinely interested in. The class is super calm and an overall beneficial environment. If you need help on school work or to focus on a different subject, Mrs. Salyer is very understanding and helpful. Students are given more than enough time to finish graded assignments, so it is easy to always have a passing grade in the class. I would highly recommend adding Digital News to your schedule if you are interested in sharing interesting news with the student body. As a senior, I wish I would have joined Digital News sooner.
Will: If you are looking to add an elective to your schedule and want to be a part of a fun group of individuals with awesome teachers and a laid back environment, Digital News is for you. Before joining this class, I wasn’t really sure about or confident with my writing skills. Mrs.Salyer always gave me permission to write about what I am interested in, which is sports. My favorite story that I was able to write was predicting the winners of a couple of conference championships prior to March Madness. Going into sports communications and journalism, this class has helped me tremendously with writing about these subjects and I can confidently say that I can write about almost everything sports related. Not only do you just write stories the whole year, but you can take many field trips to help people write their own stories. My favorite field trip that we took was when we went to Chipotle for its opening, and one of us wrote a story about it. I would definitely recommend joining this class if you are looking for a chance to write in a fun environment with a plethora of awesome people!
Marina: Out of all the classes I have taken in my 4 years of high school, I can confidently say Digital News was my favorite. We do an array of fun activities, some being; a field trip to Chipotle to cover the grand opening, a field trip to the schoolhouse to learn about the history of our town and school, monthly parties to celebrate birthdays and holidays, a baby shower for Mrs. Cramer, and more! With the relaxed atmosphere and smaller circle, it was easy to become friends with everyone in the class, making every day a fun experience to be excited to attend. The teacher, Mrs. Salyer, always helped with anything we would need, whether it was with deciding what to write about, checking our writing for any mistakes, and even helping where she could in other classes, especially English. The class is even combined with Mrs. Cramer’s yearbook class so you have a unique opportunity to collaborate with and meet new students! You can even take it repeatedly which is something I wish I would have known sooner. If you have the chance, I highly recommend trying out the class!
Digital news is a class future students should put on their schedule if they are interested in writing about topics they are passionate about and sharing their work with the student body.
