With the 2024-2025 school year coming to a close, new opportunities emerge within the senior class. Many student-athletes have made the decision to continue their academic and athletic careers at a wide range of universities. On April 17, several student athletes were recognized at senior signing day. Emmitt Filisky, Brayden Mitchell, and myself, Will Koehl are just a few of the many who put the pen to paper:
Emmitt Filisky has decided to attend Tiffin University to further his athletic and academic career. Filisky has been playing baseball for as long as he can remember, and has stood out as a shortstop on the diamond at the high school level. He is an amazing leader and the lower classmen look up to him as a player as well as a teammate.
“I just don’t want to stop playing baseball after this year. I love the game so much and I want to continue playing for as long as possible.” It is very evident that Filisky is passionate and works very hard to be the best player that he can. These traits will get him very far wherever he wants to go in life. At Tiffin, he aspires to play very early in his career and challenge the upperclassmen for playing time.
Next, Brayden Mitchell is taking his lacrosse talents to the next level, as he plans to attend Mount Union University. Mitchell has been a force on the field and has led the lacrosse team for his whole high school career. He felt that Mount Union felt like home, and they have a very good mechanical engineering program. Mitchell aspires to take his same defensive impact from high school onto the next level in college.
“I just have so much fun playing lacrosse, I just can’t imagine not playing lacrosse after this year.” Mitchell has a lot of love for the game which will take him a long way at the collegiate level. When asking him about his goals in college, Mitchell replied with, “I also want to be the defensive star of the team, that would be really cool to be able to fill this role in high school and college.” Brayden is very determined to be a star in college, and with his work ethic, it is very possible to do.
Finally, for myself, Will Koehl, I have decided to further my basketball and academic career at Frostburg State University. After playing basketball my whole life and dropping every other sport to pursue and focus on basketball, I couldn’t see myself not playing in college. I had originally committed to Kent State University to study sports journalism, but after my high school season didn’t go as planned, I decided to explore my options for playing in college. Frostburg felt like home, as well it was my best chance to play at a very high level.
Playing basketball is my favorite thing to do, and the pregame feeling of playing a competitive game is unmatched, which is why I initially decided to explore my options at the collegiate level. My plan was to play in intramural leagues, but after further thinking, the brotherhood and commitment is nowhere near the same as a competitive team. I am very glad that I decided to pursue college basketball and I am looking forward to make new connections while playing the sport that I love.
