Years ago, in the 90’s, Black Friday was one of the biggest shopping days of the year for the country. The sales were top tier, and the excitement was everywhere. People looked forward to this day more than anything to get great Christmas gifts for great prices. But now, there are no more long lines and sprinting into the store to be the first to grab something. The spirit is no longer there.
For the past few years, Black Friday has been in big competition with Cyber Monday. Since the COVID Pandemic in 2020, many shoppers shifted to online shopping due to many stores cutting their sales from 50-80% off, to in some cases only 20-35% off. It completely defeats the purpose and the fun of Black Friday. The sales are the entire point of this day, but now-a-days, the sales barely exist. Due to this, there has been more online shoppers on Black Friday than there is on the actual day for online sales, Cyber Monday, since the year of 2019. Many retail stores will also have their sales before Black Friday, so this causes many people to do their shopping early and not attend on Black Friday. This gives another reason as to why Black Friday has nowhere near the amount of fun and excitement it used to have.
The 2024 day for Black Friday shopping reached 131.1 million shoppers. As it was predicted to still be a high number, which turned out to be true, it still is not as much as years prior. Studies show the purpose of Black Friday is no longer there, and most people who still participate do it because it has always been a tradition for them and their families. They don’t want to be the ones to break it!
In the future years, there is no doubt that Black Friday will still be around with shoppers flooding the stores. The question is if it will go back to what it used to be, or will it continue to progress online? People encourage others to use Black Friday as the day to complete their shopping, so that the spirit of it doesn’t go away, and traition can stay alive.
