In an effort to protect young drivers and provide them with car maintenance skills, Travel Guardian, a Junior Achievement business, introduces comprehensive roadside assistance kits.
Have you ever had a roadside emergency? Whether that’s your car breaking down or just the ice stuck on your windshield on a cold morning, Travel Guardian’s got you covered! This Junior Achievement business has a clear mission: to support young drivers by equipping them with the necessary items to handle common roadside issues. And not only that; most young drivers don’t know the first step to basic car maintenance. It’s important for young drivers, and honestly everyone, to know how to do car maintenance skills. Travel Guardian also created a website with extensive and informational videos on car maintenance skills. These videos will include step to step tutorials on how to do skills such as changing a tire, checking a tire gauge, how to properly use a seatbelt cutter, or any other safety measure.
“Travel Guardian allows young drivers to feel safe on the road, and that’s all we want. We think it’s important to give people the resources they need to be familiar with car maintenance skills. We show videos of certain skills like changing a tire, checking a tire gauge, properly using jumper cables, etc..,“ CEO, Drew Bonvenuto, said.
The idea for Travel Guardian came to life during a brainstorming session among the Junior Achievement team. After several discussions, the group realized there was a common challenge among drivers—many people don’t realize how unprepared they are for roadside emergencies until it’s too late. With busy schedules and the growing reliance on smartphones and GPS systems, many drivers neglect to keep basic emergency supplies in their vehicles.
Haley Brown, the Chief Finance Officer of Travel Guardian says, “We wanted to create a product that could help drivers with everything from changing a tire to jump-starting a battery, and make sure they’re not stuck without the tools they need in an emergency. “
The result is a compact, organized roadside assistance kit that fits neatly in any trunk or backseat. Each kit contains essential items like a First-Aid Kit, poncho, gloves, scraper, tire gauge, Jumper Cables, SOS banner, screwdriver, flashlight and emergency cone. The team also included detailed, easy-to-follow instructions to guide drivers through common roadside problems, along with our QR codes that take you directly to our website, making it user-friendly for people of all experience levels.
As part of the Junior Achievement program, students have the opportunity to run a real non-profit business, from product development to marketing and sales. For the Travel Guardian team, this experience has been invaluable. The students have learned how to manage a business, from conducting market research to designing a product and creating a brand. They also gained hands-on experience in building relationships with suppliers, setting prices, and managing a budget.
“We’ve learned so much about teamwork, communication, and how to run a business,” mentions the Chief Marketing Officer, Makana Coblentz. “It’s been amazing to see our ideas come to life and to know that we’re creating something that could actually help people.”
